The effects of maize and sugarcane were studied on the demographic parameters of Sesamia nonagrioides under controlled environmental conditions. Life table parameters were estimated using age-stage two-sex life table method. Total developmental times of immature stages were 53.51 ± 0.42 and 39.58 ± 0.14 days on maize and sugarcane, respectively. The fecundity values were found to be 93.07 ± 2.94 and 122.95 ± 6.72 eggs/female on maize and sugarcane, respectively. Based on the analysis, the intrinsic rates of increase (r) and the mean generation time (T) of S. nonagrioides were determined as 0.0909 ± 0.0027 and 0.0579 ± 0.0021 day?1; 42.09 ± 0.21 and 56.83 ± 0.63 days on sugarcane and maize, respectively. Consequently, the sugarcane was a better host for development and population increase of S. nonagrioides than maize. These results can be used to predict population dynamics of the pest on the natural hosts and to improve mass rearing technique on natural diets in insectariums.  相似文献

Clinically significant increases in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) have been noted upon acute withdrawal of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO). Previous studies in the normal pulmonary circulation demonstrate that iNO increases endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels and decreases endogenous nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, implicating an endothelial etiology for the increase in resistance upon iNO withdrawal. However, the effect of iNO on endogenous endothelial function in the clinically relevant pulmonary hypertensive circulation is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of iNO on endogenous NO-cGMP and ET-1 signaling in lambs with preexisting pulmonary hypertension secondary to increased pulmonary blood flow. Eight fetal lambs underwent in utero placement of an aortopulmonary vascular graft (shunt lambs). After delivery (4 wk), the shunt lambs were mechanically ventilated with iNO (40 ppm) for 24 h. After 24 h of inhaled NO, plasma ET-1 levels increased by 34.8% independently of changes in protein levels (P < 0.05). Contrary to findings in normal lambs, total NOS activity did not decrease during iNO. In fact, Western blot analysis demonstrated that tissue endothelial NOS protein levels decreased by 43% such that NOS activity relative to protein levels actually increased during iNO (P < 0.05). In addition, the beta-subunit of soluble guanylate cyclase decreased by 70%, whereas phosphodiesterase 5 levels were unchanged (P < 0.05). Withdrawal of iNO was associated with an acute increase in PVR, which exceeded baseline PVR by 45%, and a decrease in cGMP concentrations to levels that were below baseline. These data suggest that the endothelial response to iNO and the potential mechanisms of rebound pulmonary hypertension are dependent upon the underlying pulmonary vasculature.  相似文献

We developed Ulysses as a user-oriented system that uses a process called Interolog Analysis for the parallel analysis and display of protein interactions detected in various species. Ulysses was designed to perform such Interolog Analysis by the projection of model organism interaction data onto homologous human proteins, and thus serves as an accelerator for the analysis of uncharacterized human proteins. The relevance of projections was assessed and validated against published reference collections. Human Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stem cells (hWJSCs) are multipotent stem cells that could be aggregated into 3D spherules. ITGA4 and ITGA5 genes encode α4 and α5 subunits of integrins, respectively. In this study, we analyzed expression levels of ITGA4 and ITGA5 gene mRNAs in undifferentiated and 3D spherules forming hWJSCs in order to determine their expression pattern for possible future treatment of cancer cells in a co-culture fashion. For the purpose of obtaining hWJSCs, umbilical cords were collected from patients with caesarian section at full term delivery. The cells were then characterized according to cell surface markers using flow cytometry. Furthermore pluripotency of the obtained cells was verified. Subsequently the cells were aggregated in 3D spherules using hanging drop cultures. Expression levels of ITGA4 and ITGA5 gene mRNAs were determined by RT-PCR and Real time PCR, both in the initial undifferentiated cells and those aggregated in the spherules. The obtained hWJSCs demonstrated pluripotency, differentiating to adipogenic and osteogenic cells. They also expressed mesenchymal stem cell surface markers. Following the aggregation of these cells and formation of 3D spherules, mRNA expression levels of both genes were significantly reduced (P?<?0.05) compared with the initial undifferentiated state. The results of this study demonstrated that aggregation of hWJSCs into spherules alters their expression of ITGA4 and ITGA5. Bardet-Biedl syndrome, BBS, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with clinical presentations including polydactyly, retinopathy, hyperphagia, obesity, short stature, cognitive impairment, and developmental delays. Disruptions of BBS proteins in a variety of organisms impair cilia formation and function and the multi-organ defects of BBS have been attributed to deficiencies in various cilia-associated signaling pathways. In C. elegans, bbs genes are expressed exclusively in the sixty ciliated sensory neurons of these animals and bbs mutants exhibit sensory defects as well as body size, feeding, and metabolic abnormalities. Here we show that in contrast to many other cilia-defective mutants, C. elegans bbs mutants exhibit increased release of dense-core vesicles and organism-wide phenotypes associated with enhanced activities of insulin, neuropeptide, and biogenic amine signaling pathways. We show that the altered body size, feeding, and metabolic abnormalities of bbs mutants can be corrected to wild-type levels by abrogating the enhanced secretion of dense-core vesicles without concomitant correction of ciliary defects. These findings expand the role of BBS proteins to the regulation of dense-core-vesicle exocytosis and suggest that some features of Bardet-Biedl Syndrome may be caused by excessive neuroendocrine secretion.  相似文献

Dietary niche partitioning is postulated to play a major role for the stable coexistence of species within a community, particularly among cryptic species. Molecular markers have recently revealed the existence of a new cryptic species of long-eared bat, Plecotus macrobullaris, in the European Alps. We studied trophic niches as well as seasonal and regional variations of diet in eight colonies of the three Plecotus species occurring in Switzerland. Faeces were collected monthly from individuals returning to roost after foraging. Twenty-one arthropod categories were recognized from the faeces. All three species fed predominantly on Lepidoptera, which made up 41%, 87% and 88% (means across colonies) of the diet composition of P. auritus, P. macrobullaris and P. austriacus, respectively. The occurrence of numerous fragments of both diurnal and flightless insects in the diet of P. auritus (but rarely in the diet of the other two species) indicates that this species mostly gleans prey from substrates. P. austriacus and P. macrobullaris are more typical aerial feeders. The latter two species have narrow trophic niches, whilst P. auritus has a much broader diet. Comparison of intraspecific and interspecific niche overlaps in P. auritus and P. macrobullaris in sympatry suggests dietary niche partitioning between these two species. In contrast, the high similarity of the trophic niches of P. austriacus and P. macrobullaris, associated with a typical parapatric distribution, indicates competitive exclusion. The best conservation measures are preservation and restoration of habitats offering a high abundance of moths, the major prey of the three Plecotus species.  相似文献
